INTRODUCTION OF SPC'S ORIGINAL PROGRAMME
Why is English so important today?
 Why do people learn English?

Our original programme was developed after these simple questions were raised by our students.

Most English courses offered at schools in foreign countries usually focus on English grammar, reading and writing skills. These courses are aimed at improving English skills needed to pass college or university entrance exams.

The style of English offered at Sun Pacific College is very different and focuses on real life communication. The topics listed here are only some of what we teach.

A simple skill such as introducing yourself may seem easy, but the way you introduce yourself in your own language and the way you would introduce yourself in English to someone from another country is very different.

Here is an example of a French student introducing himself to another French person.
"Hello my name is Louis. I come from Bozel." (In French of course.)
This is enough information when speaking to someone from the same country. However, if speaking to someone from another country it is better to provide more information.
 Example
"Hello my name is Louis. I come from Bozel in France. Have you heard of it? Bozel is a very small village in the French Alps. It is a beautiful old town only 20 minutes from a famous ski resort called Courchevel. Every winter many tourists from all over the world come to enjoy the snow."
Successful communication is best achieved by providing extra information and asking open questions. Our aim is to give students the skills needed to make and control conversation in a variety of real life situations.
WHY HAVE SMALL CLASSES?
In most English Colleges, class sizes are usually between 15-20 students, or in some cases even up to 30. Sun Pacific College has a maximum class number of 12.

Let us explain.

As we respect our students' wishes to learn English as quickly as possible, we have made small classes our policy.
  • With small classes, teachers can understand the needs of every student.
In large classes, teachers cannot even remember the names of every student.

  • How much opportunity does each student have to talk in the classroom?
In a small class, everyone has a lot of opportunity to speak and every student can listen and participate. Learning from each other's mistakes is the best way to learn.

  • How fast will your speaking ability improve?
In a small class with more time to speak, improvement can be up to 3-5 times faster.

Every study shows how learning in small classes is better.
SUN PACIFIC COLLEGE'S LEVELLING SYSTEM
The way in which students are levelled at Sun Pacific College is different to the way students are levelled at other colleges. We respect that students usually acquire English in two distinct ways. One is by listening and speaking and the other is by studying reading, writing and grammar. This often results in differences in levels between speaking and grammar, reading and writing. Some students may have higher speaking and listening skills and lower reading, writing and grammar skills and vice versa. Therefore, we place students in classes appropriate to their levels in different skill areas.
Placement Test Day of Placement Test
Before attending classes, all new students must take a placement test. This test usually takes about three hours to complete. The test consists of writing, vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening and speaking components. From the result of the test students are placed in appropriate classes. Placement tests are held every Monday morning.
Progressing from one level to the next
Every week teachers have a meeting to discuss students' progress. If teachers feel a student is ready to advance to the next level, they will be moved up. Every student is judged on their motivation, performance and understanding in class and from the results of weekly progress tests.
